CLAIMED TO BEREASON FOR NAZI HATE
Book ReviewByBookmark
HITLER'S grandmother was a servant maid in the Rothschild mansion in Vienna, and his mother was the illegitimate daughter of a Rothschild. That is thepsychological explanation of Hitler's fanatical hatred of the Jews and hisbrutal treatment of the Austrian Rothschilds. At least Herr Hansjuergen Koehler says so, and he professes to haveworked for several years as one of the chiefs of the Gestapo, and had directorders to recover at any cost the fatal file that contained a record of Hitler's life.
IF what he says is true that file was responsible for the cowardly murder of Chan-cellor Dolfuss, for the mysterious disappearance ofChancellor Schuschnigg, andfor the invasion that led to the incorporation of Austria within the Third Reich.Chancellor Dolfuss had the Austrian records searched for  information concerning Hitler's parentage and his youth. A copy of every documentwas prepared for him, and Dolfusswrote a minute across the file stating that it would be valuable to future historians because it explained Hitler's burninghatred of the Jews. Dolfuss intended to use the knowledge if Hitler became troublesome to Austria, but before he could publish anything he was murdered.    The file passed to Schuschnigg, who continued the work started by Dolfuss. He knew very well that this file had an immense importance for Hitler. Hadn't it already cost the life of a Chancellor of Austria? And Schuschnigg wanted to continue his investigations in the most dangerous directions. His collection was in two parts. The first consisted ofdocuments trying to elucidate the origin of Johanna Hitler, the Fuehrer's grandmother, and the facts of when and how the Hitlers came to Upper Austria.
The second part contained documents referring to the mysterious suicide of Hitler's niece, Greta Raupal. Schuschnigg had succeeded in finding out more about this tragic affair than anyone else, although even he could not dis-cover all the motives and details.Like Dolfuss Schuschnigg kept this file as his trump card, and   let it be known to Hitler that he would publish the contents as a White Book if Hitler persisted in interfering with the sovereign rights of Austria.
The file was hidden in a strongroom in Schuschnigg's house, and while Madame Schuschnigg lived no Nazi sqy could get into the Chancellor's study. She was acci-dentally killed in a motor accident—at least it was said to be accidental—and soon afterwards a beautiful Nazi spy, the Countess Vera Fugger-Czernin, was intro-duced to the Chancellor by the notorious von Papen.
She won the heart of Schuschnigg, and in the midst of her elaborate intrigues with von Papen and Gestapo agents to steal the file she discovered that she inturn loved the lonely Chancellor. It was too late for her to draw back, but she was cunningly persuaded by von Papen that the only way to save Schuschnigg'slife was to deliver the file. This she did—to von Kettler, von    Papen's secretary—on the day the    Chancellor went to the famous meeting with Hitler at Berchtes-gaden.
Historians and publicists describing the tragedy of Austria maintained that the catastrophe was caused by Schuschnigg's acceptance of Hitler's invitation. The Fuehrer received him, their version ran, as a real dictator, he showed himbrutally the mobilisation plan of the German troops, and then presented him    with his ultimatum.
According to the author the truth was quite different. The  fate of ancient Austria was in a woman's hand. After many delays Schuschnigg decided to go to the fatal meeting. He went calmly and composedly, because he knew he could balance Hitler's exaggerated demands.
Schuschnigg knew that Hitler realised what a fatal weapon that dossier could be. Should the Austrian Government publish the documents in a White Book it would deal Hitler a mortal blow.Even if it did not succeed in bringing him to fall (it was hardly probable that such a book could be smuggled into Germany in largenumbers) any Nazi movement abroad would be discredited in the merciless light of cold facts. Schuschnigg, of course, had no idea what was going on behind his back. He behaved in a rathersuperior manner, and according to the author, Heydrich, a Gestapo chief, told him that Hitler seemed to be nervous. Hours went by while Hitler waited for the arrival of the fatal file. In the afternoon Hitler broke off the conference; he refused to continue the discussion until von Kettler arrived. Shock For Schuschnigg At last news came that Kettler's car had reached the frontier, and . . .The fate of Austria was sealed. About 11 p.m., when the accursed documents arrived at Berchtesgaden, the discussions began again." . . . and if you do not fulfil my conditions German troops will occupy Austria," Hitler ended. And now tragi-comedy followed. Schuschnigg replied . . . alluded cautiously to the publication of a "White Book" which would . . . "Consist of empty papers." Hitlerinterrupted him ruthlessly. He walked to a cupboard in the wall, opened it . . . and Schuschnigg paled. He recognised the file which he thought safely in his ownstudy. A few hours later the Nazis took possession of Austria and Schuschnigg became a prisoner.
And now for another sidelight on this story of treachery and crime. Von Papen's secretary was shadowed by the Gestapo (directed from Vienna at that moment by the professed author of this sensational book). It was found that he had had the documents secretly photographed by order of von Papen, so a few days later his battered body was dragged out of the Danube.
The author adds that only four living persons—Schuschnigg (he may be dead), Signor Mussolini (through whom a copy was sent by Schuschnigg to Hitler),Heydrich (chief of the political branch of the Gestapo), and him self—have actually seen the documents, but he has reason to believe that von Papen sent a photographed copy to London, and is al-lowed to live until the Gestapofinds some way of recovering it.Then von Papen is doomed. That is a brief summary of one of the many sensational stories in this book, "Inside the Gestapo" (published by the Pallas Publishing Company Ltd., London, andreceived by us through Gordon and Gotch Ltd.). The book is said to have been written by Hansjuergen Koehler, who says that he escaped from Germany, knowing that sooner or later he would die for the knowledge that he possessed. He predicts that he is signing his own deathwarrant by the publication of the book, being certain that the Gestapo, active in every country in the world, will get him sooner orlater.
Based On FactsThe cautious reader may be pardoned for havuig his doubts whether Herr Koehler ever belonged to the Gestapo, for a man who played such a prominent part in the crimes that are related would hardly recoil so obviously in the telling of them.Unquestionably the book is based on facts, because it is well documented, and many of the incidents and the persons mentioned could be checkedbv other records. It is not inexcusable to think that the author is a British Intelligence Service man. who probably knows more about the workings of the Gestapo than most of its own agents know. In any case, his character studies, more particularly those of the masters of the Gestapo, ring true.Take for example his description of the mediaeval monster—Himmler.     "Sensitive Soul" "Never under any circumstances," Heydrich told the author, "are any women or children related to prisoners to be admitted to our Chief. It is our full responsibility that he should not be brought in contact with them."Then, he added with a queer little¡ smile: "Heinrich is a sensitivesoul."Naturally this surprised Koehler.Heinrich Himmler, Chief of the Ger-man Police, master of the dreaded S.S. in the whole Reich, did not impress him as a particularly sensitive or sentimental being. He describes Himmler as having a forbidding, rather unpleasant face, and the fact that he wearspince-nez makes him look like a school inspector suffering from severe chronic indigestion.Himmler's mental qualities could not be called very brilliant. But healways had known how to hide this fact behind a front of nauseat-ing servility in the presence of his Fuehrer. Also he was incredibly unscrupulous: he could be blind, deaf, an dumb whenever there was an unpleasant task to do.
Sadistic Weakling It is rather ironical that Himmler is considered by all his friends, and also by Hitler, as "extremelyhonest" and "rather sensitive." No doubt he is a pedant and a prig whom the smallest speck of dust, a slightly tarnished button can send off into a terrible rage. "I have seen him show signs ofthe deepest distress on seeing an inkstand or a file out of the usual military precision on his desk," writes Koehler. "His sub- ordinates often tremble when they spill a drop of ink, or if some papers slip from theirhands."Rather than a man of iron, ashis subordinates maintain, Koehlersays Himmler is a sadistic weakling and an unscrupulous sycophant. His suave flattery, his cunning sense of intrigue have made him more dangerous than anystrong "go-getter" could be. The book is full of sensational stories. It tells of a father who was betrayed innocently by his twelve-year-old daughter, to whom he was devoted, and emphasises that the Gestapo has voluntary or involuntary spies in every home in Germany; it tells of the horrors   perpetrated by the Gestapo in concentration camps, where men are beaten to death every day; it reveals how men who are wanted by the Gestapo are kidnapped from foreign countries; and amazing stories are told of the Nazi spy system and sabotage system in Austria,Czechoslovakia, and Poland, and how the Nazi spy system operatesin every country in the world, all ready to carry out active sabotagein event of war."Inside the Gestapo" is a book of extraordinary revelations, revealing the sordid brutality of Nazidom and its devilry in probing into the crannies of German life. Most readers will agree that a party which organised such a soul-destroying horror should be held accursed throughout the whole world and down the ages yet to be. ||
